Italy

I spent a short six days in Italy - visiting Florence, Rome and then Venice.

The first and foremost thing I noticed in Florence? EVERYTHING is leather. Cafe menus, journals, purses, shoes. They had beautiful markets and I would say 70% was made in leather - REAL, soft, leather. Our first day even consisted of a long and boring leather tour (we went out the night before so heads are ringing and eyes are closing). Although after the tour, it was exploring the city and markets. Everyone in our contiki has found the friends they click with and achieved comfortability in the group by this stage, which makes everything easy and enjoyable :)

Next stop was ROME!

I was really looking forward to seeing the Colosseum and hearing about the history was actually interesting and exciting. We had a tour guide taking us around and explaining stories behind each building, step, corner and hallway. Unfortunately, everything is falling apart. I'm surprised it's still safe to walk around the colosseum, there's also scaffolding infront of quite a few buildings as they try to repair history.

We then enjoyed pasta, pizza, and more pasta and pizza followed by GELATO! Something I noticed about Rome - everyone is slim. How do they eat carbohydrates all day and stay slim!? - Their pasta and pizza is made with only the essential and basic ingredients. Their pizza has very thin crusts and minimal toppings (unlike Dominos) and pasta is thin, with just enough sauce and toppings.

We stayed at a campsite in Rome - it felt like school camp with no rules and a bar!

Last was my favourite part of Italy - VENICE

The scenery blew my mind in Venice. Nothing looked real, I felt I was in a movie or a picture. Seeing photos of an amazing place, and suddenly it's in front of you is bizarre and surreal. Venice was a lot smaller than I imagined, and it took one day to explore, having coffee and pizza beside the water, enjoying a gondola ride with the girls and enjoying the shops and markets. The day passed quickly and we travelled back to campsite on a boat!
